The Global Young Academy (GYA) is an organisation of 200 diverse, early-to-mid-career researchers from a range of disciplines, selected for their scientific excellence and commitment to using their research to make the world a better place. It is internationally considered one of the most prestigious scientific academies, and has members and alumni from 86 countries who are all passionate about the role of science in creating a better world. The office of the GYA is in Halle (Saale) and is hosted by the world-famous German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina.
On the 23rd of March 2020, the GYA announced Patrick, along with a diverse cohort of 40 scientists (23 identify as female, 1 as non-binary, and 16 as male) from 30 countries, as new members of this prestigious academy. Patrick was selected on the basis of his leading work in archaeological science and tropical forest archaeology which includes a number of high-impact publications, his authoring of the acclaimed book Tropical Forests in Prehistory, History and Modernity with Oxford University Press and his application of prehistoric investigations to 21st century policy and conservation concerns.
By developing, connecting, and supporting young scientific talent from six continents, the GYA empowers young researchers to lead international, interdisciplinary, and inter-generational dialogue with the goal of making global decision-making both evidence-based and inclusive. It also seeks to make science a safer space for all. Members work together on projects that address global problems and high-level policy interactions with fundamental research that crosses disciplinary boundaries.
